What Is A Boom Dolly And Why Are They Important?

The construction industry is goes through the same hard times as any other company in any other industry.  The final costs of projects are watched closely and having to get a project done in a safe, efficient and affordable manner require new technologies and ideas.  When you step back and take a look at the total operation of a crane, you can see there are places that you can save time.  Saving time is saving money and that makes the entire project a win-win for everyone.

Enter The Boom Dolly

What the heck is a boom dolly?  Well, as you can imagine from the name, it is a dolly that will help you move the crane boom to where you need it to go.  In most cases, you are moving the boom from the yard to the project site.  Seems simple right?  A boom dolly will help move MORE of the boom to your location.  The crane company that is using a boom dolly can keep more of the boom in tact while moving it through the streets and highways.

Keeping your load under certain restrictions as it moves is very important.  There are many laws and safety concerns when it comes to moving around equipment that large.  If you can move the crane boom with the outrigger boxes, swing-away jib, block, ball and some counterweight, you are going to save the entire operation time during the setup process once everything is at the construction site.

Boom Dollies Offer Options

Most companies that offer boom dollies do so with a few options to choose from.  HMR models are available with single, split and tilting tower options.  Three or four axle dollies are also available when the overall weight requires a little more to be touching the ground during transport.

Just like some of the trailers that are offered in our store, a company like Drake trailers can customize a trailer to what the customer actually needs.  The same goes for the boom dolly.  It can be adjusted, added to, made longer or more rigid depending on the customer's needs for the project or the type of crane they are moving around.

With the dolly attached here, the boom can stay assembled to some degree and moved easily through the streets to the project location.  This type of forward thinking and technology has saved the construction industry a lot of time and money.  It has also made the overall process of moving a crane more safe.

You may have seen a setup like this while on the road, if you have, please share a link to a photo or story that you found interesting in the comments section down below.
