Manitowoc MLC650 Gets The Call For Huge Power Plant Project

Posted by Weiss Bros on 19th Jan 2018

Since most of us that are reading through this blog are huge fans of Manitowoc Cranes, it only makes sense that we drop a little love to the company when it happens to be in the news.  This week, we are talking about a huge power plant project that is happening in Red Rock, Oklahoma right now.  With a $500 million project in the works, there is only one type of crane that just makes sense to have on the site.

The MLC650 has been moved into the center of all the action for the "coal and scrubber project".  The new power plant is going to be built with emphasis on reduce pollution to meet the new EPA standards that are going to be enforced in January of 2019.  This project in particular requires that the plant gets fitted with a dry coal scrubber system.  The Air Quality Control System is very similar to the catalytic converter on your vehicle, only a a much larger scale.

At the same time the plant is scrubbing the air that is moving out of the stacks, it will be burning the coal at a higher temperature with hopes of reducing the amount of pollution overall.  Back to the crane.  The company in charge of all of the heavy lifting is PCL Construction and for that, they decided to go with the MLC650 rented from Maxim Craneworks.

The main concerns for the project to go as planned including the need to lift more than 101 tons and placing it inside some very tight places.  When you are thinking about moving very heavy things with precision and a smaller crane footprint is needed, what is the first crane that comes to mind?  You bet, the MLC650 was a perfect fit, according to the project team.  Because the working area has a lot of obstacles, it was important that the crane used could be erected onsite and the MLC650 with VPC-Max attachment fit the requirements.

According to the project supervisor, before the MLC650 was an option, the company would have had to go with another crawler type crane, but would not have had room for the counterweight wagon.  There would have been a lot of lost time moving and swinging the counterweights around the obstacles as well, adding cost to the project.

The MLC650 is a true masterpiece and if you ever get to see one in person, consider yourself lucky.  The crane worked almost every single day from May 2017 until the end of November 2017 when the work required of it was finally wrapped up.

According to the site technician,“The MLC650 was perfect for this job because of its smaller footprint and added mobility compared with other crawler cranes,” he said. “It’s helping us to make the lifts where a larger crane might not have fit, and it’s able to easily go the distances we need.”
